Magnuson, Alvarez headed to Futures Game

|
TORONTO -- The Futures Game is often a rite of passage for baseball's top prospects, representing a stepping stone to the big league stage. At this year's annual showcase event, the Blue Jays will have a pair of players in uniform for the World team.

Minor League pitchers Trystan Magnuson and Henderson Alvarez -- two highly-regarded arms in Toronto's system -- were named Tuesday to the World roster for the 12th annual XM All-Star Futures Game, which will be held on July 11 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim.

There are currently 201 players on active Major League rosters who have appeared in a previous Futures Game, and 62 players who made the cut for either the World or United States rosters in past years went on to become big league All-Stars. Jays center fielder Vernon Wells and second baseman Aaron Hill are among that elite class.

Magnuson -- a 6-foot-7 right-hander out of Vancouver, B.C., in Canada -- has been dominant this season out of the bullpen for Double-A New Hampshire. The 25-year-old reliever -- selected with the 56th overall pick in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft -- has gone 1-0 with a 2.09 ERA through 25 games, striking out 30 and walking seven over 38 2/3 innings.

Alvarez, who is considered one of the Blue Jays' top starting pitcher prospects, has gone 5-3 with a 3.19 ERA through 12 starts this season for high-Class A Dunedin. Over 59 1/3 innings over that span, the right-hander has compiled 40 strikeouts against 12 walks. Henderson -- a native of Valencia, Venezuela -- signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2006.

The XM All-Star Futures Game will begin at 6 p.m. ET and can be viewed live on ESPN2, ESPN2 HD and MLB.TV. XM will provide satellite radio play-by-play coverage of the Futures Game on XM 175 in addition to its other live coverage from Anaheim.
