The Jays cleared some room on their 40-man roster by exposing infielder Jarrett Hoffpauir to waivers, and the Padres scooped him up Wednesday.
Hoffpauir appeared in 13 games for the Jays this season, including 11 at third base and two at second. He batted .206 (7-for-34) with a double, two walks and five strikeouts. He had a strong season for Triple-A Las Vegas, where he hit .295 with 26 doubles, six triples, 16 homers and 73 RBIs.
The Jays had claimed Hoffpauir off waivers from the Cardinals last winter. He has appeared in 21 total Major League games for the Cards and Jays.
Toronto's 40-man roster is now at 39, with Rommie Lewis, Jesse Litsch and Dustin McGowan not counting toward that title because they are still listed on the 60-day DL.
