YANKEES 6, BLUE JAYS 3
at Dunedin, Fla.
Thursday, March 29
Yankees at the plate: Third baseman Alex Rodriguez belted a 1-2 offering from Jason Scobie over the right-field fence for a solo home run in the fourth inning. The blast was A-Rod's fourth of Spring Training. Robinson Cano added a solo shot in a four-run seventh, and Derek Jeter homered in the eighth.
Blue Jays at the plate: Left fielder Reed Johnson led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer -- his third blast this spring -- off right-hander Steven Jackson. Johnson scored again in the sixth on a groundout by Alex Rios, who filled in for center fielder Vernon Wells (stiffness in left shoulder). Outfielder John-Ford Griffin chipped in a solo homer in the eighth.
Yankees on the mound: Jackson, who was acquired in the trade that sent Randy Johnson to the Diamondbacks, pitched five-plus innings and gave up two runs on five hits. The right-hander struck out two and walked one in the outing.
Blue Jays on the mound: Relievers Scott Downs, Francisco Rosario and Casey Janssen each turned in a scoreless inning for the Blue Jays. In the second, Janssen -- a candidate for a spot in Toronto's bullpen -- struck out Rodriguez, left fielder Hideki Matsui and catcher Jorge Posada in order to retire the side.
Grapefruit League records: Yankees 14-12-2; Blue Jays 10-14-4.
Up next: Toronto right-hander Victor Zambrano is scheduled to take the mound for the Jays in a 1:05 p.m. ET tilt against the Indians on Friday at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Fla.
New York lefty Chase Wright is slated to take the mound against the Tigers on Friday, when the Yankees head to Lakeland, Fla., for a 1:05 p.m. ET contest at Joker Marchant Stadium.
