2013 Blue Jays award winners

The Toronto chapter of the BBWAA held their annual vote and selected the following players as recipients of 2013 awards.  1B/DH EDWIN ENCARNACION was the unanimous choice for the Neil MacCarl Award as Player of the Year, his 2nd consecutive season earning the honour. RHP CASEY JANSSEN also was named a back-to-back winner being selected as Pitcher of the Year, while RHP TODD REDMOND was named Rookie of the Year and LHP BRETT CECIL was name the Most Improved Player. The John Cerutti Award was bestowed upon recently retired INF MARK DeROSA.

ENCARNACION, 30, earned Player of the Year honours again after posting a .272 average with 36 home runs and 104 RBI. He became the 1st player in club history to finish a season with at least 35-HR (36), less than 65-SO (62), while also recording more walks (82) than strikeouts. Also winning in 2012, Encarnacion is one of four Blue Jays to record back-to-back seasons of 35+ HR/100+RBI.

JANSSEN, 32, recorded a 4-1 mark with a 2.56 ERA and 34 saves in 36 opportunities to earn Pitcher of the Year honours after also winning in 2012. His 94.4 save percentage ranked 1st in the AL & finished T-1st in the majors among relievers with at least 30-save opportunities, while also setting a franchise high. Janssen has now converted 56 of 60 save opportunities (93.3 percent) since taking over as the closer on May 9, 2012 - 4th best save percentage in Majors over that period.

REDMOND, 28, earned Rookie of the Year award after going 4-3 with a a 4.32 ERA in 17 appearances, including 14 starts. The right-hander had at least seven strikeouts in four of his starts, including a career-high 10 vs. Houston on July 28 and ended the season with an 8.9 strikeouts per nine innings pitched, the second highest on the staff.

CECIL, 27, was a 2013 American League All-Star selection and finished the season with a 5-1 record with one save and a 2.82 ERA.   He recorded 70 strikeouts in 60.2 innings pitched in a career high 60 games. This season posted 20.0 consecutive scoreless innings over 17 appearances from May 12 to June 25.

DeROSA, 38, earns the distinguished John Cerutti Award, given to a person that exemplifies the goodwill, cooperation and character as displayed by the late John Cerutti. DeRosa receives the honour after completing his 16th and final season for his off field contributions this past season that represent what the award was designed to signify.
