Blue Jays raise money for 8-year-old's surgery

Young Toronto fan Ben Sheppard suffers from spastic hemiplegic cerebral palsy

The Blue Jays Baseball Academy, along with Honda Canada and Whitby Minor Baseball Association, will host a one-day clinic on Sunday at Iroquois Park in Whitby, Ontario, to help raise money for an 8-year-old Blue Jays fan suffering from left spastic hemiplegic cerebral palsy.

The clinic, which runs from 9 a.m.-noon ET, has sold out with more than 420 participants. Registration fees and a matching contribution from Honda Classic will help fund the Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) surgery needed for Ben Sheppard, a young fan from Whitby.

More than $68,000 has been raised for Sheppard's surgery, in addition to a $100,000 fundraising effort by the Blue Jays that ensures Sheppard will receive his surgery.

Each participant at the clinic will receive a Blue Jays T-shirt, Blue Jays cap, and a Roberto Alomar 12-inch Pro Model baseball glove. Instructors are scheduled to include Alomar, Alex Gonzalez, Tony Fernandez, Devon White, Lloyd Moseby, George Bell, Jesse Barfield, Carlos Delgado, Brian McRae, Duane Ward and Nigel Wilson.
