Jays claim Fien; Richmond to 60-day DL
LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Blue Jays added some pitching depth on Thursday, claiming right-hander Casey Fien off waivers from the Red Sox. To clear room on the 40-man roster, Toronto placed injured righty Scott Richmond on the 60-day disabled list.
Fien, 26, appeared in nine games for the Tigers in 2009, posting a 7.94 ERA in those appearances. The right-hander spent most of last season with Triple-A Toledo, where he finished 2-1 with a 3.41 ERA. Over 58 innings in 42 games in the Minors last year, Fien saved 14 games and ended with 66 strikeouts against 15 walks.
The 30-year-old Richmond has been bothered by a right shoulder impingement this spring. The injury is the same issue that kept the starter on the DL for most of July last season. After going 8-11 with a 5.52 ERA in 27 games with Toronto last year, Richmond had hoped to compete for a spot in the club's rotation this spring.
