On August 22nd, the TORONTO BLUE JAYS will unveil a new gymnasium floor at the Boys and Girls Club of Durham, made possible by a Field of Dreams grant from Jays Care Foundation. The Club will also officially be introduced as the newest Blue Jays Baseball Academy Rookie League program site in Canada. Joining staff members of the Blue Jays and Jays Care Foundation will be Blue Jays alumni DUANE WARD and DEVON WHITE, who will lead members of the Boys and Girls Club of Durham in a Blue Jays Baseball Academy Instructional Clinic.
The Toronto Blue Jays, through JAYS CARE FOUNDATION, have invested $72,635 in the Boys and Girls Club of Durham for the reconstruction project - an endeavor that removed high levels of asbestos from the gymnasium floor and helped repair structural damage to the club's foundation.
"We did not want kids to be displaced due to the presence of asbestos in their gymnasium, which would have forced the gym to close," says Brendan Mohammed, Manager, Programs & Outreach, Jays Care Foundation. ""It was important to repair the floor and keep the kids in a positive and healthy environment."
The Blue Jays are committed to leaving a lasting legacy following the completion of Capital Space Grant refurbishment projects and are proud to welcome the Boys and Girls Club of Durham into the Rookie League program family. The Blue Jays Baseball Academy Rookie League is Jays Care Foundation's flagship program and will reach over 8,000 kids in 140 communities across Canada in 2014.
